Interestingly enough, I was initially majoring in criminal justice and realized that having an accounting degree could be a way to get into the FBI or CIA due to an understanding of white-collar crime and money laundering. However, once I started studying accounting and auditing, it all just clicked for me, and I knew immediately this was the career choice I wanted to pursue.
While in the private sector, I actually hired Armanino for a project, and that partner and team really attracted me to the firm. They worked cohesively and collaboratively and exemplified the qualities that I want to be a part of. I was drawn to the entrepreneurial environment, the ability to come in and make an impact at any level, and the possibility of working with a multitude of industries and companies.
My favorite clients are the ones who are the most innovative and with whom I build true collaborative relationships. I enjoy listening to their goals and adding value to help them get there. I am always striving for excellence, and it is fun to work with clients who are of the same mindset.
Listening and collaboration. Within my teams, I allow people to be innovative and encourage them to always collaborate to get the most efficient and effective results. With clients, I like to follow the logic that I have two ears and one mouth for a reason. Listening and understanding your client’s point of view are the most important factors in building a quality relationship.
My wife. She has been there for me from early on in my accounting career, always encouraging me to explore new opportunities even when I’m out of my comfort zone. She always pushes me to grow and evolve personally and professionally, which is why I’m the man I am today.
Always continue to learn. Pick a new area, task or niche and try to master it. Develop your knowledge, ask questions, be inquisitive and drink from the fire hose that is public accounting.
